The Slogan Tees BlogWhat we're loving right now...

Hippies to Hashtags

"Slogan tees were big in the Sixties, the Eighties ... now everyone's  wearing them again." - Yasmin Sewell, founder of Être Cécile

Perhaps one of the most surprising things about the slogan tee is how such a  simple, inexpensive piece of throw-away fashion has endured.

Each generation has a message to share. In the 60's we wanted to 'make  love, not war', in the 80's it was 'choose life' and now, in the age of social  media, the slogans are, well, 'all about me'?

Not content with posting our every emotion and thought on Facebook or  Twitter. Some of us are now wearing our hearts on our tees too?

For 'Generation Share' slogan tees are just another form of self-expression.  From 'nothing to wear' to '#selfie' – t-shirt slogans now look more like tweets  or status updates.

Designer Henry Holland cites the "Instagramisation of fashion" and  the fact that fashion fans have adapted their social feeds into their  wardrobes. Some even call it 'self-help style', mimicking the memes  (philosophical quotes or slogans) posted daily on Facebook.

That's not to say that everything is so utterly self-indulgent. Katherine  Hamnett who launched her block-capital slogan T-shirts in the late 80's still  produces slogan tees with a social conscience. 'Stop Fracking', 'Education not  Missiles', 'Save the Future' and 'World Peace Now' all have their roots in the  grass roots activism of the 60's.

One thing is for certain, the slogan tee has become one of fashion's most  enduring and iconic garments for one reason. We like our clothes to say  something about us. Slogan tees just spell it out.

Every wardrobe should have at least one!
